Book Review

As a fresh graduate, entering what one call’s “the real world”, how are we supposed to live with all these new found freedoms from a Christian perspective? In Shelby Abbott’s Pressure Points: A Guide to Navigating Student Stress he addresses what life throws at you as you enter into the transition to adulthood. Throughout Abbott’s book he touches on a wide variety of “pressure points” that can be a huge factor for stress and anxiety and supplements these points with biblical wisdom he has given and used himself through the years of being a college student and engaging with college students on a daily basis.

I love that Abbott’s book is focused on the culture we live in at hand. Rather than shaming the millennial generation, he builds them up as leaders of the next generation. In Pressure Points Abbott talks about purity, technology and people pleasing, and purpose. He covers a huge variety of topics seamlessly. Pressure Points is a great tool not only for high school graduates, college students, but anyone who is known as the “millennial generation”.

Shelby Abbott has written a wonderful guide that is extremely quotable and easily applicable. While Pressure Points did take me a while to read in comparison to other novels I have been able to read, it was due to the heaviness of the text. When you pick up Pressure Points, expect to mediate of godly counsel and the Word of God. Pressure Points by Shelby Abbott is a 5 out 5 stars. This guide is one of a kind, jam packed full of godly wisdom for the millennial generation, and applicable to the culture we live in today.

Thank You

A big thank you to Net Galley for supplying this book as well as the Publishers New Growth Press for giving me the opportunity to review this wonderful book! I also want to thank you Shelby Abbott for speaking into the millennial generation and talking on a wide range of topics that are usually brushed under the rug. I will be sharing this guide to many.

Coping With Times Of Uncertainty

I believe it is during times of uncertainty and trials that how we view God is truly revealed. It is easy to praise him when things are going right. But, what do we do when things are up in the air? What do we do when nothing seems to be going right?

One mistake many make, myself included, during times of uncertainty it to try and figure out things. We are analytical by nature, we are problem solvers, and we want to get things done! How many can agree that God’s timing is not our timing and that his thoughts are much higher than ours!? So often, we try and figure out how things are going to work out. Where the finances are going to come from, when the healing is going to come, or why things happen. When I try and figure everything out, I have realized I display a lack of trust and I stress myself out! Overall, it is just not a good feeling and something is off. That thing is my view of who God is and where my trust has been placed.

Faith is not focusing on what we can see.

For instance, my husband is getting out of the military and he is our main source of income. Through this time of transition, change, and uncertainty, God has revealed that our jobs are a vessel for him to give us provision rather than something we earned. He has also told me that I should rely on him to provide, not the job. God has shown me that nothing is permanent unless he wills it to be so. Therefore, trusting in my husband to provide rather than trusting in Abba Father to provide is a big no-no! This also puts tremendous pressure on my husband. (Sorry babe!)

There have been so many times that I have tripped up and put my trust in the wrong thing. Forgive me Father. In times of trials, suffering, and uncertainty, we are to look at what is known.

The more I search, the more I learn, the more I observe, I have began to understand that Abba Father is the only thing that is known and steadfast. He is the same yesterday, today, and forever. His promises are yes and amen! I cannot put faith in myself or the situation around me, especially since things look impossible. But, I can declare his promises, and I can praise him for all he has done! He has never failed me, why would he start now?

When you are going through a trial or uncertainty, where is your trust? In the circumstance or in the way maker, the only one who can change what is visible? Do you complain or do you praise?
What may seem impossible for man, is possible when God is put in his rightful place on the throne of your heart! Let us not lean on our own understanding and he will make our path’s straight. God is so good that even when we make a mistake, he still holds us up! Thank-you Papa God!!! In our uncertainty, God not only reveals the position of our heart, but he uses what looks impossible to show how good and how big he is. Through faith we know that he is for us, he makes a way when there is no way, and we have nothing to fear because he is our refuge.

If you are in the midst of the storm, remind yourself of who is your Papa and meditate on his faithfulness, declaring his word, praise instead of worry. He has this!

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart,
And lean not on your own understanding;
In all your ways acknowledge Him,
And He shall direct your paths.” -Proverbs 3:5-6 NKJV

β€œFor My thoughts are not your thoughts,
Nor are your ways My ways,” says the Lord.
β€œFor as the heavens are higher than the earth,
So are My ways higher than your ways,
And My thoughts than your thoughts.”-Isaiah 55:8-9 NKJV

“The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord,
And He delights in his way.
Though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast down;
For the Lord upholds him with His hand.” -Psalms 37:23-24 NKJV

“The young lions lack and suffer hunger;
But those who seek the Lord shall not lack any good thing.”-Psalm 34:10 NKJV

True Rest

God can do more when you rest in him, by you casting your cares and putting your full trust in him… Rather than you working tirelessly day and night and becoming weary and spreading yourself thin. He is working out everything for our good. & You were never meant to do it in your own strength.

Oh Lord, how you knew how much I needed this.

My Takeaway

  • There is a difference between sleep and rest.
  • You can wake up from sleep and not feel rested
  • True rest comes from trusting in the Lord
  • He can do more while you rest in him rather than in your own strength
  • We grow weary doing things in our own strength
  • We are in complete reliance of him.
  • He is able to move more and we are able to rest sweeter through submission
  • Sweet sleep comes from true rest found only in Jesus Christ

What Are We Really Thinking About?~Taking Thoughts Captive~Bible Study-3.29.2018

Reading and meditating on the Word of God is essential to our relationship with Christ. It is apart of our armor to fight off the enemy. Not only that, but when we really think about what we are thinking about (yes, I just said that), are our thoughts coming from God and lining up with biblical truth or are they from the enemy? In this bible study there was a lot of discussion! πŸ™‚

When I first started walking with God I was SHOCKED at how many lies I believed about God and how many lies I believed about my own identity.

I thought God was always disappointed in me..LIES

I though that God’s love was based on my performance…LIES

I also thought I was a terrible human being and didn’t have anything worth living for…LIES
I constantly worried about EVERYTHING…(NOT FROM GOD)

When I started studying, meditating, and spending time with God and reading his word. I began to change from the inside out. I realized a lot of the thoughts I did have weren’t what God thought about me at all. I also realized that there was some changes I need to make in my life to become who God intended me to be.

With that being said, I really hope you enjoy the notes from this bible study. Taking my thoughts captive and lining them up with God’s word has truly changed me from the inside out!

BuJo: My Fierce Reminder

For those who Journal or may want to start, I will be adding pages of my Journal and still continuing to write other posts pertaining to mental health & of course God! I really love the way this one turned out πŸ™‚ It will be a page I turn to when I need to remember the fierce daughter God created me to be. Sometimes we all need a friendly reminder of who we are in Christ and scripture to beat up that dirty devil. Creating this journal helps with stress, anxiety, and is a way to praise God in a different way!
