Title: Healing Your Marriage When Trust Is Broken Finding Forgiveness and Restoration (UPDATED & EXPANDED)
Author: Cindy Beall
Publisher: Harvest House Publishers
Healing Your Marriage When Trust Is Broken by Cindy Beall was originally written many years ago and has now been updated and expanded. I love that message is the same throughout this book, you can trust God through the betrayal you are feeling. Cindy talks about the deep betrayal of her husband’s pornography addiction that later led to her husband, who happened to be a pastor, to have a baby with a mistress. She explains the process of the initial grief and the redeeming work of God’s hand in their marriage.
I love that this book is filled with authenticity and vulnerability. Cindy is not shy about the hard work it takes to be committed to marriage. The Beall’s testimony is an example of what is possible with God and a servanthood marriage after devastation. Their marriage is a work of God and what it means that He exchanges beauty for ashes.
Overall, Healing Your Marriage When Your Trust is Broken is a unique book that can help guide hurting marriages back to the healer Himself. The only downside to parts of the book are there is uses of “get over it” and “move on” that could be hurtful to those who are just learning of their spouses betrayal. You can see Cindy’s heart throughout the book is not the same language that is conveyed overall. The strongest parts of the book are the questions that were asked to other couples that had also endured broken trust. To have a variety of backgrounds and different scenarios reaches a greater audience.
Overall, Healing Your Marriage When Trust Is Broken (Updated & Expanded) has very helpful tools for those who are just beginning to walk in their healing journey and marriages 10 years in alike. I do recommend this book to spouses who are hurting after marriage betrayal. I do advise those reading to continue you reading past the hard to hear parts of this book. It seems Cindy’s heart is one who sympathizes deeply with those who have been hurt. However, at different parts of the book it can be taken as someone who is telling you to just get over it or there is no hope for the couples who don’t have a spouse as willing to work at marriage recovery. I encourage you if you continue to read, you will see that her heart is to help.
Bottom line, this book is a reminder that you are not alone, marriage restoration is possible, and God is trustworthy, no matter where you are in your recovery journey.
Title: When To Walk Away: Finding Freedom From Toxic People
Author: Gary Thomas
Gary Thomas’ When To Walk Away: Finding Freedom From Toxic People is nothing short of lifechanging. As a Christian, many of us have unintentionally believed a lie that walking away can be “not Christ-like”. Throughout the 240 pages of wisdom Thomas displays scripturally sound examples of not only when Jesus walked away but why it is important that we have the wisdom to know when to walk away. I loved the emphasis on how toxic people can often times be a distraction. At times, Thomas explains, we can even feel guilty because we are not able to help those toxic people into the kingdom of God. He so elegantly explains that sometimes staying within the toxicity is more selfish because it takes your energy and places it in the wrong place.
Throughout the book Gary Thomas goes through a variety of topics such as, Working With Judas, Toxic Parents, Kids, Marriages, and even how we can be toxic to ourselves. The Appendix is filled with 41 examples of scripture of when Jesus walked away from people who were toxic. Wisdom and experience is found through each chapter. Gary Thomas used his old ways of people pleasing as lessons to advance the Kingdom of God!
I cannot put enough emphasis on how EVERYONE needs to read this book. My life experience in this fallen world has given me plenty of experience with toxic people. This book gave me the wisdom of how to walk away when necessary and not feel guilty, knowing Jesus walked away at times because he was kingdom focused. A highlighter ran out by the time I finished this book. If you are someone who struggles with walking away from people because it feels “unchrist-like”, get a copy of When To Walk Away: Finding Freedom From Toxic People. I will be reading this again and again. There is too much wisdom to just read this book once.
Of course, this book has made it to my favorites shelf, and I give a 5/5 stars! Get yourself a copy! (No this is not sponsored; it is just that good!)
Title: Discernment, The Essential Guide To Hearing The Voice of God
Author: Jane Hamon
Publisher: Chosen Books
I have not written a book review in a while. Not for my lack of reading, but more so that I have not found many books worth sharing here with you. Until, Discernment by Jane Hamon fell into my lap. Let me start off my staying that if you have a strong desire to grow in discernment, this is the book for you! Have your highlighter ready! This book will bring you into maturity as you digest the Word of God through every page and the testimonies shared within the pages.
When I started reading this book, I had somewhat of an understanding and distinguishing between spirits. This gift is not something that is talked about very much in the Body of Christ. However, when I was reading through each chapter, I gained more confidence through the Holy Spirit and what he had been speaking to me. I no longer felt like I was going crazy, but was brought clarity and confirmation of the things I was discerning.
Discernment by Jane Hamon is a book to equip the saints for such a time as this. As the Body of Christ it is of great importance that we are not only discerning spirits but the times that we are in! Hamon covers a lot of ground throughout this book. She talks about discerning times, angels, demons, and why it is important to grow in discernment for every Child of God.
If you are looking to grow in discernment and have a deeper understanding of the spiritual realm, Discernment by Jane Hamon is for you. Through the scriptures provided and the testimonies she has shared, it will open your eyes and bring confidence through the power of the Holy Spirit.
Overall, I give this book a 5/5 and it will be headed to my ‘favorites’ book shelf. I will be rereading this time and time again as a refresher. This book is a gift of ‘karios’ for the Body of Christ.
Title: Discerning Prophetic Witchcraft: Exposing the Supernatural Divination that is Deceiving Spiritually-Hungry Believers
Author: Jennifer LeClaire
Publisher: Destiny Image
I want to start off with the bad news about Discerning Prophetic Witchcraft, because there is much more good to talk about in this review. In the very beginning of the book Jennifer LeClaire talks about ‘out of body’ experiences being from the Holy Spirit. I can assure you that out of body experiences are witchcraft/new age. I know this only because before I came to the Lord, I had them and it was because of dabbling in occult that this happened. I am so thankful that the blood of Jesus has washed me clean and set me free from my past. However, I am thankful that I am able to share with you to stay away from out of body experiences due to it being a stumbling block and hindrance to those who truly love the Lord. I would love to sit down with her and hear what she has to say concerning this topic. The only other thing I feel led to critique was that the first couple chapter’s it was a slow start. However, the rest of the book makes up for the critiques given above. (Let me add, no book is perfect and as an author myself I find it necessary to share ways that can correct but also exhort. This is not only helpful for the author but those who are reading!)
Do I think you should stay away from Discerning Prophetic Witchcraft due to the above critiques? Absolutely not. This book has helped equip me by sharpening my discernment and open up my spiritual eyes. I would advise you to read slow to be able to fully digest the depth of the content provided. Jennifer LeClaire is full of wisdom, boldness, and love for her God given assignment to equip the saints in the prophetic. My love for this tool starts with the amount of scripture used to understand where she is speaking from. We should be weary of books who speak about such subjects from their own wisdom rather than God’s Word. Discerning Prophetic Witchcraft had me step back and ask the Holy Spirit to examine my heart. Have I ever unintentionally prayed witchcraft prayers or been exposed to such false doctrine? LeClaire writes with authority and conviction given from the Holy Spirit. She shares her wisdom to equip you and I to be aware of the increasing amount of wolves in sheep’s clothing sitting in the pews and even on stage. LeClaire has wrote Discerning Prophetic Witchcraft in a way that gives room for repentance for those who had unintentionally fallen away from God’s heart. But, she is also very firm against those who purposely deceive which is conveyed through the emotion in her writing.
Overall, I give Discerning Prophetic Witchcraft 4 out of 5 stars. I would only recommend this book to those who are actively in the word of God. This is not spiritual milk for babes, this is meaty and full of wisdom. I want to leave you with this final thought before you think about investing in this book. Jennifer LeClaire has a love for the prophetic and the saints that is evident through her writing. I believe that this tool, despite the critiques, is a must have for those who are actively participating in waging warfare. Discerning Prophetic Witchcraft is a heart checking, eye opening, book on Prophetic Spiritual Warfare.
Grace is Greater is another heart transforming book by Kyle Idleman. The best way to describe all the books I have read by him so far are convicting yet, comical and relatable. I was able to read Grace is Greater through Kindle Unlimited for free. As I read the book I was humbled to see areas that I needed to repent in but also encouraged through a deeper understanding of what Grace is. So often at church and even in Christian circles we throw around grace loosely. However, Grace is Greater is an excellent tool for all those in every walk of life. Kyle Idleman not only defines grace but talks about the need we all have for it and the way we must display it in every day life. I appreciate the continual vulnerability that Idleman has in all his books by sharing his life experiences. Because he shares the need he has for Grace, this invites you in to look at the times you have overlooked the need for grace in your own life.
One of my favorite quotes from the book gave me a real reality check and conviction from the Holy Spirit concerning me extending grace to to to others.
People need us to raise a hand, not point a finger.
Kyle Idleman (Grace Is Greater)
If you are looking to grow in the area of understanding what Grace is, the need for grace in your life, and how to extend grace to others…Grace is Greater is a wonderful book to digest. I could cruise through Kyle Idleman’s books because of the humor he uses with his footnotes will have you on the floor laughing. However, the meatiness of text is one that you will need to digest and take your time through.
Grace is Greater is a 5/5 stars. Through all the laughs and personal conviction I felt through ingesting this wonderful book, it deserves nothing less. I highly recommend Kyle Idleman’s other books if you have already read this book such as, Not A Fan and God’s At War.
