“This saying is trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance: “Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners”—and I am the worst of them. But I received mercy for this reason, so that in me, the worst of them, Christ Jesus might demonstrate his extraordinary patience as an example to those who would believe in him for eternal life. Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen.” -1 Timothy 1:15-17 CSB
Every single one of us has a past, a life before Jesus. Even as we grow as Children of God, being renewed in the image of our creator, we get sucked into the enemies deception and we sin. There are many times where “people” point to our past, the flaws, and our sin. Satan is known as the accuser, the ultimate thief, and the original and best liar there is. The reason I put people in quotations is because the warfare we are in is not against flesh and blood (Ephesians 6:12). The enemy wants us to believe that
our problem is people, but really it is him.
It is of great importance that when people bring up our past or hurt us in any way, shape, or form, that we take it to Jesus immediately and then ask him to show us them through HIS eyes, through HIS love, and through grace and mercy. Because, we all have FALLEN SHORT. Yet, thorough the blood of Jesus Christ there is abundant mercy and grace. We therefore, as his children, should EXTEND his grace and mercy (Romans 3:23-24, Luke 6;28, Matthew 5:44).
Now that we have went through the importance of forgiveness, grace, and mercy, let us proceed to 1 Timothy 1:15-17. I love the boldness that Paul has. He remembers when he was Saul and so do many other people he has encountered. Yet, he knows that what the enemy intended to use to bring division, God is using for the good. He acknowledges his past life, but he does not stay there. Because in the next verse and in your new life there is an abundance of Mercy, Grace, and Freedom.
Why does the enemy love to point at our past? Because he wants us to be consumed in who we used to be so we will not walk in the fullness of our new identity as Children of God. When you know who you are in Christ, the authority that Jesus has given you, and the truth, IT WILL SET YOU FREE. Where Jesus has came to give us life and life abundantly, the devil is here to steal, kill, and destroy.
When the enemy tries to come at you with your past, point him to the blood of Jesus that was shed for you on the cross. The old you has been crucified with Christ and you are NOW in right standing with the almighty God. Speak what God has spoken over you. Do not partner with the lies of your past life, you are not the same person anymore. You are a NEW CREATION and the old you has passed away. I want to encourage you if you do not already, to make declarations every single day about WHO God says you are. It is really important for us to take our thoughts captive and make them obedient to Christ. So when the enemy tries to come in and feed us lies, we hit him with the sword of the spirit and he flees. Your identity is not found in your past mistakes. Your identity is found in Jesus Christ.
Here are a few things that you are able to speak over yourself every single day, even multiples times a day if you simply believe that Jesus is Lord and Savior:
- I am a new creation in Christ Jesus, the old me has passed away. (2 Corinthians 5:17)
- I am a child of God (John 1:12, Romans 8:15-16, 1 John 3:1-3)
- I am forgiven (John 3:16, Isaiah 1:18, 1 John 1:9, Psalm 103:12)
- I am redeemed (Ephesians 1:7, Colossians 1:13-14, Galatians 3:13)
- I am in right standing with God (2 Corinthians 5:21, Romans 5:1)
- I am more than a conquer (Romans 8:37)
- I am victorious through Jesus Christ (1 Corinthians 15:57)
- Nothing can separate me from the love of God (Romans 8:38-39)
- I am God’s masterpiece and he has planned a purpose for me long ago (Ephesians 2:10)
- Sin is powerless over me because Jesus died to free me from sin (Romans 6:10)
- I died to sin so I no longer live in it (Romans 6:2)
There are so many In Christ scriptures that you can declare over yourself. There are specific scriptures that Holy Spirit will give to you if you ask to declare over yourself every single day. declare them, build your faith, and live out who you are as a new creation! The enemy often attacks your identity first. Just as he did to Jesus in the wilderness…
“During that time the devil came and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become loaves of bread.” But Jesus told him, “No! The Scriptures say, ‘People do not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.”-
-Matthew 4:3-4 NLT
The devil knows that when you know your identity in Christ, that he has no authority of you because Jesus has all authority and he gave it to you (Matthew 28:18-20, Luke 10:19). When you know your identity, you know the promises of God are coming to pass because his word cannot come back void (Isaiah 55:11). The only way the devil can do anything is if we believe the deception he brings. When we refuse to believe the lies and stand in what God says, our pasts are just a display of our past life before God and our present is the representation of who Jesus is and what he has done.
The word of God is powerful. That is why so many people have such a hard time getting in the word. But through time in his presence, in prayer, and through his word, THINGS HAVE TO CHANGE. When we display the true change only found in Jesus Christ, we are a walking billboard for what Jesus can do and is willing to do for everyone!!
Be unashamed of your past, you do not live there anymore and that is the old you. God can use where you were to where you are now to give hope to others and display that there is power through the blood of Jesus. You are living and breathing testimony of what the blood of Jesus has done! If Jesus was tested about his identity by the devil, we will be too. Stand firm in who you are in Jesus Christ! Remember the REAL YOU is ONLY found through HIM!
I love how big our God is and Holy Spirit. On mother’s day I had the honor of watching this sermon that was in direct correlation to this blog post.
